To protect the ecosystems Twelve families from Dibulla join the scheme of payments for environmental services

The initiative contemplates the delivery of an economic incentive for the support in preservation works, sustainable forest restoration and development

The Regional Autonomous Corporation of La Guajira reported that twelve families living in the vicinity of the San Salvador river basin (Dibulla), were linked to the Payment for Environmental Services program, through which an economic incentive is granted, in money or kind, to recognize the actions and practices associated with the preservation and restoration of ecosystems.

This is how Samuel Lanao Robles explained it, who explained that the initiative is part of a project that is being developed in partnership with Petrobras and Más Bosques, "These works also contemplate an entire training program in which families participate, aimed at minimizing conflicts in land use to favor the maintenance and generation of environmental services”.

In addition, specified the beneficiaries will receive the incentive for four months, and its counterpart is to become new guardians of the environment and peace of La Guajira, “This is a very important role since they support us, from their territories, to protect the structure, functionality and composition of ecosystems and to promptly denounce environmental infractions so that the respective measures can be adopted together with the authorities.”, added.

Meanwhile, Manuel Manjarres Altahona, Coordinator of Ecosystems and Biodiversity of Corpoguajira, indicated that this weekend concluded one of the training days in which issues such as sustainable forest development were addressed, pest identification, diseases and threatened native species of the dry forest.

“One of the components of this cycle was also the restoration and transfer to definitive sites of 52 young seedlings (of 16 different species), in order to decrease their level of competition with parent trees. The individuals were planted in the protective strip of the San Salvador River”.

Finally, the official pointed out that the restored species represent a high ecological value, among them stand out the cedar, mahogany, caracolí, fig and shrimp.
