The Regional Autonomous Corporation of La Guajira- Corpoguajira- carries out an awareness campaign for the care of wild fauna and flora in the department. The strategy seeks to get the community to voluntarily hand over the species found in homes as domestic animals..

In this sense, The Corporation has been training environmental watchdogs to be multipliers of good practices with the environment, in order to prevent hunting and illegal possession of animals.

As an example of the above, in Barrancas, the lookout Carlos Solano Solano, with his family, made official delivery to the Corporation of 2 deer (male and female), of year and 5 months old; found in the upper part of the Serranía del Perijá when they had 2 weeks of life. The mother of the animals was a victim of hunters in the area.

The assessment by specialists from the environmental entity indicated, that the animals are in good clinical and nutritional conditions. They were later transferred to the headquarters of the Southern Territorial (Fonseca), to undergo a rehabilitation process, medical management- veterinarian and assessment of his physical condition. In January 2017, The deer will be relocated to a forested area of ​​the agroecological center, located in rio sherry, property of Corpoguajira.

So far this year, the community has voluntarily given 81 animals. The species that have been delivered the most are reptiles, especially turtles, the birds follow, and in smaller numbers the mammals. Of this figure, have relocated to their habitat 52. It should be noted that in operations carried out between the Corporation and members of the Public Force, 188 species.

Corpoguajira applauds Mr. Solano's initiative, his wife and children, who become an example of wildlife conservation in the department and invites the guajiros to voluntarily hand over all animals that are in captivity.
