This process had been detained since the year 2007, due to the ownership of the lot in which the construction of the final disposal site would be advanced; situation that was resolved due to the efforts and determined management of the Mayor of Riohacha, Rafael Ceballos Sierra; allowing the capital of La Guajira to have an ideal place for waste management.

This important work, that has an investment of $2.100 millones, will have a shelf life of 30 years and will benefit at least 231.000 habitantes.

A total of 38 indigenous communities, live in the environment of the land where the construction of the landfill will take place, reason for which the guidelines of the prior consultation that will be carried out in the coming weeks with the members of the ethnic group were defined. Corpoguajira, the Ministry of the Interior, Uniagraria, Interaseo, entre otras entidades, will participate in the activity.

By carrying out this work, the environmental impact in Riohacha will be significantly reduced., regarding solid waste treatment. The landfill will be located at kilometer 11, from the road from Riohacha to Valledupar, the operation is expected to start at the end of this year.
