The Regional Autonomous Corporation of La Guajira, confirmed their involvement and support for the project to restore mangroves Integrated Management District Musichi (Manaure) and the Los Flamencos Sanctuary (Riohacha). This coordinated initiative of the company Petrobras, National Parks of Colombia and Invemar, will contribute to the measures taken by the environmental authority, for the preservation of the biodiversity of these ecosystems, considered breeding grounds, reproduction and refuge for endangered species.
The project includes different phases, including the characterization of the study area, to analyze its structure, ecosystem services and factors of change of mangroves; additionally will work with communities and restoration actions are designed to rehabilitate the tidal channels, strengthen natural regeneration and raise the microtopography.
The work will last six months.
Mangroves serve as lungs environment because produce oxygen and use carbon dioxide from the air. Great importance as they are in a food web with bird nesting sites, foraging, growth and protection of reptiles, peces, crustaceans, molluscs and many endangered species.
