BAHÍA HONDITA COMMUNITY, COMMITTED TO THE CONSERVATION OF SEA TURTLES

After identifying clutches, the community accompanies and takes all necessary care to help newborn individuals start their lives at sea, this time they have been 211 Little Caretta caretta or bighead turtles.

Riohacha, 6 August 2020

The Wayuú indigenous community of Bahía Hondita, in the municipality of Uribia, continues to be committed to the care and conservation of the different species of sea turtles that frequent this area of the department.

During the current nesting season, the community of Bahía Hondita has been developing community monitoring activities for beach patrol, with the purpose of detecting the footprints of females that arrived to spawn or those without successful nesting. This is how after the identification of big turtle nests or "wou wou" (Caretta caretta) next to hatch and the necessary care, they accompanied 211 Newly hatched baby turtles until the start of their first trip to the Caribbean Sea, where they will continue their development.

The important work of the community is carried out within the framework of the conservation agreement for the protection of nests, nesting females, or individuals foraging in the coastal marine zone of the La Guajira peninsula, consolidated since 2011, with the participation of entities such as the Regional Autonomous Corporation of La Guajira, Conservation International Colombia, Cerrejón and the George Dahl Hydrobiological Foundation, thus contributing to guarantee the permanence of sea turtles in our seas, as they are mostly categorized as critically endangered species, both globally and regionally.

Resolution 1912 of 2017 of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development establishes the list of threatened wild species of Colombian continental and coastal marine biological diversity that are found in the national territory and sea turtles are dendro of them.

The Regional Autonomous Corporation of La Guajira, Corpoguajira, thanks the Bahía Hondita community for their continuous effort in the conservation of sea turtles in the department.
