ABOUT OUR WETLANDS KNOWN

The 2 February will commemorate World Wetlands Day, then learn important aspects that determine their conservation:

What functions does a wetland?

Flood control, retention and export of sediments and nutrients, mitigate climate change, water depuration, stabilization of the coasts and high tourist value.

How many wetlands are there in La Guajira?

38 coastal wetlands, known for maintaining contact with marine waters, frequently being areas of recharge or discharge of aquifers.

17 inland wetlands, known to have births in wooded areas, rocky and abundant vegetation.

Do you know the species that inhabit it?

Flora: 38 macroalgae species, which correspond to 3 phyllums (Rhodophyta 42%, Chlorophyta 40% y Phaeophyta 18%)

Fauna: 122 species belonging to 32 of mollusks, 26 Of fishes, 26 of crustaceans, 17 sponges, 7 echinoderms, 6 cnidarians and 1 annelids.

Actions carried out by Corpoguajira as the highest environmental authority:

  • Study projects for the delimitation of wetlands.
  • Prioritization of wetlands at risk for the creation of contingency plans.
  • Days of environmental education to make the population aware of the environmental value, uses and prohibitions.
  • Filing legal actions for institutional articulation seeking to safeguard these ecosystems.
