CONSERVATION Perijá be expanded and declare new protected areas in this region of La Guajira

ECODATO
The tropical dry forest is the most threatened, in Colombia it is less than 8% that was originally.

The Serranía de Perijá is one of the most important ecosystems in the south of La Guajira, has dry forests, Andean and sub-Andean, therefore in 2011 was declared a Perijà Integrated Management District with an extension of 23.882,7 hectares.

Taking into account the prevailing need to conserve species of fauna and flora that are decisive for the ecosystem balance, Corpoguajira, in coordination with the USAID Natural Wealth program, has begun work to diagnose and identify new areas for protection in this natural complex.

La Guajira has large amounts of dry forest, – one of the most threatened in Colombia – and the Serranía de Perijá has a great coverage of this type of ecosystem, This being its main conservation objective in the interest of safeguarding the species that exist there.

Building conservation processes with high community participation will be essential to achieve the success of this initiative that seeks to improve the management of natural resources, increase the economic benefits of the inhabitants of the area, implement good environmental practices and leverage resources for the conservation of biodiversity.
